The Retro Garage in Shymkent is a museum with a collection of cars from the USSR era that will make the hearts of young & old car lovers beat faster.
In the heart of the lively city of Shymkent in the Torequlov Street near the Rixos Hotel lies a hidden gem for car lovers and history buffs alike – the Retro Garage Car Museum. Opened in June 2019, this museum offers a unique insight into the fascinating history of the automotive industry, especially the USSR. Here, visitors can admire an exceptional collection of vintage cars that impressively reflect the technical progress and design of bygone times.
A collection that has grown over 26 years. The exhibition at the Retro Garage currently includes 26 cars and 3 motorcycles that have been restored with great care. From old UAZ models that were in service during World War II to luxurious Packard limousines and various generations of the famous Zhiguli – the variety of vehicles tells a fascinating story. The museum’s founder, Damir Gafarov, a passionate car restorer, has built up this impressive collection piece by piece over 26 years. Every vehicle in the museum has been restored and brought back to life with dedication.
Restoration with attention to detail The work on the vehicles on display is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the Retro Garage team. On average, it takes six to eight months to fully restore a vehicle and bring it back into drivable condition. Even cars that were once destined for scrap were given a second life thanks to the museum’s careful work. This attention to detail makes a visit to the Shymkent Auto Museum a special experience.
Vintage cars for special occasions Another highlight of the museum is the opportunity to rent some of the restored vehicles for special occasions. Whether it’s weddings, film productions, commercials or music videos – Retro Garage‘s vintage cars add a touch of elegance and nostalgia to any event. This also means that the exhibition changes regularly, as some vehicles are loaned out for these occasions.
A look into the future The Retro Garage team is already planning to expand the exhibition. More vintage cars are to be added in the near future to make the collection even more diverse. For vintage car enthusiasts, this means that there is always something new to discover. The museum’s doors are open every day, so visitors always have the opportunity to delve into the past of automotive history.
